Most people pick an AI assistant the way they pick a phone: whatever a friend uses. That works until you hit a task your assistant is weak at. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all capable general assistants, but each one has clear strengths. This battle splits them by job, so you can use the right one for each task instead of forcing one tool to do everything.

Ratings are our editorial judgement from everyday use, not a lab benchmark. All three ship updates often, so we revisit this battle regularly.
Updated: as of October 2026 (ChatGPT Free/Go/Plus, Claude Free/Pro, Gemini free and Google AI plans as listed in India). AI products change fast, so check each tool’s official pricing page before you subscribe.
Round 1: Long-form writing
For blog posts, emails and reports, Claude usually needs the fewest edits. Its drafts tend to sound less like a template, follow tone instructions closely, and keep structure across long pieces. ChatGPT is a close second and is quicker at punchy short copy such as headlines, captions and ad lines. Gemini writes clearly but often falls back on generic phrasing unless you give it a detailed brief.
Write a 300-word intro for a blog post titled “Why Indian students should learn prompt engineering in 2026”. Audience: first-year college students. Tone: friendly, no hype, no buzzwords. End with one question to the reader.
What to look for: does it obey the “no buzzwords” rule? Does it sound like a person? Does it actually stop near 300 words?
Claude for long pieces and editing your own drafts. ChatGPT for quick, punchy short copy.
Round 2: Coding
All three can write working code, explain errors and refactor. Claude is especially strong at understanding a large codebase and making careful multi-file changes, and its developer tool, Claude Code, is built for agent-style coding. For a wider field, see our AI coding assistants ranking. ChatGPT is just as strong for quick scripts and debugging and has a big ecosystem of coding tools. Gemini is very good and stands out when you work inside Google’s developer products.
Write a Python script that reads a CSV of website URLs, checks each one’s HTTP status code, and saves broken links (4xx/5xx) to a new CSV. Add retries and a timeout, and explain how to run it on Windows.
Claude, narrowly, for bigger projects. For a one-off script, any of the three will do.
Round 3: Research with live web results
ChatGPT search and Gemini (backed by Google Search) are the strongest for fresh facts, news and prices, and both show sources you can click. Claude can also search the web and is good at turning sources into a careful summary. Whichever you use, open the sources before you trust a number. All three can still state something confidently and be wrong.

Tie: ChatGPT and Gemini. Use Gemini if you live in Google’s ecosystem.
Round 4: Images
ChatGPT and Gemini can both create and edit images inside the chat. ChatGPT’s images (ChatGPT Images 2.5, released September 2026) are strong at following detailed instructions and rendering text, such as posters and thumbnails. Gemini’s Nano Banana image models (Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana Pro as of October 2026) is excellent at editing photos and keeping a character consistent across images. Claude can describe and analyse images but, as of October 2026, doesn’t generate them natively (Claude Design makes slides and layouts, not photos or illustrations). For the full image-tool fight, see our AI image generator battle.
Tie: ChatGPT and Gemini. Claude sits this round out.
Round 5: Voice
ChatGPT‘s voice mode feels the most natural for back-and-forth conversation, such as language practice, interview prep or brainstorming on a walk. Gemini Live is a close second and is handy on Android. Claude supports voice too, but it isn’t the main reason to choose it.
ChatGPT.
Round 6: Working with your Google apps
If your life runs on Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and YouTube, Gemini has a home advantage: it is built into those apps and can work with your files without extra setup. ChatGPT and Claude can reach many of the same apps through connectors, but it takes more setup.
Gemini.
Round 7: Long documents and PDFs
Upload a 100-page report and ask for risks, contradictions or a summary per chapter. Claude and Gemini both handle very long inputs well. Claude tends to give the more careful, well-organised analysis, and Gemini copes with the biggest piles of material. ChatGPT is very good too, but it is our third pick for very long files.
Summarise this document in 10 bullet points, then list any claims that are not backed by data in the document itself, with page numbers.
Tie: Claude and Gemini.
Round 8: Free plan value
All three have free plans and rupee pricing in India. As of October 2026, ChatGPT Go is ₹399/month and Plus ₹1,999/month (the free 12-month Go offer for India ended on 21 January 2026); Claude Pro is ₹2,399/month billed monthly or ₹2,000/month billed yearly; Google AI Plus is ₹399/month and Google AI Pro ₹1,950/month, and eligible Indian college students can get AI Plus free for a year. Prices change, so confirm on each official pricing page before you subscribe. On free plans, Gemini is usually the most generous, ChatGPT’s free plan covers the widest set of features, and Claude’s free plan has the tightest usage limits.
Gemini for the most generous free plan.
