AI image tools have split into specialists. One makes the most beautiful art, one follows instructions to the letter, one is a photo editor in disguise, and one you can run on your own computer. Picking the wrong one means hours of re-rolling prompts. Here is who wins each round.

Editorial judgement from everyday creative work, not a lab benchmark. Image models update often, so we revisit this battle regularly.
Updated: as of October 2026 (Midjourney V8.2 default, ChatGPT Images 2.5, Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 / Nano Banana Pro, FLUX). AI products change fast, so check each tool’s official pricing page before you subscribe.
Round 1: Pure artistic quality
Midjourney still has the strongest default “taste”. Even a short prompt comes back with good lighting, composition and mood. It’s the pick for concept art, album-cover vibes, fantasy scenes and mood boards. The others can match it, but usually only with a longer, more careful prompt.

Round 2: Doing exactly what you asked
Ask for “three people, the one on the left in a red kurta holding a laptop, a whiteboard behind them with a bar chart” and most tools drop at least one detail. ChatGPT Images is the most reliable at keeping every detail, counting objects and placing them where you said. Because it works inside a chat, you can also fix things in plain language: “make the chart green, keep everything else”.

Round 3: Text inside images (thumbnails, posters, ads)
This used to be AI art’s biggest weakness. ChatGPT Images now handles headlines and short paragraphs best, with Gemini and FLUX close behind. Midjourney has improved but, in our use, still garbles longer text more often. Whichever tool you use, proofread every letter before you publish.

Round 4: Editing your own photos
Upload a product photo and say “put this on a marble table with morning light”, or a selfie and “change my shirt to a navy blazer”. Gemini’s image model is the standout here. It keeps the original subject recognisable while changing what you asked for, and it’s fast enough to iterate in seconds. That makes it perfect for small-business product shots.
Gemini (Nano Banana).
Round 5: Keeping the same character
Comics, children’s stories, brand mascots and Instagram carousels all need one character who looks the same in every frame. Gemini is the most dependable at this from a single reference image. Midjourney is a strong second: its older Character Reference (--cref) only works on V6, Omni Reference (--oref) works on V7, and its newer Edit model can take up to four reference images.

Round 6: Control, privacy and running it yourself
FLUX (from Black Forest Labs) comes in several versions. Some earlier FLUX image models have downloadable open weights you can run on your own GPU. The newest, FLUX 3 Image (October 2026), is API and commercial-licence only for now, with open weights announced but not yet released. Open models run locally or inside tools like ComfyUI. That gives you full control, no per-image fees once it’s set up, and the option to train it on your own style. It’s the pick for developers and anyone automating image creation at scale.

Round 7: Price
Midjourney is subscription-only, with no free trial on the main site as of October 2026 (plans start at US$10/month). ChatGPT and Gemini include image generation in their apps, with limited free use and higher limits on paid plans. FLUX can be free if you have a capable GPU, or pay-per-image through API providers. Check current plans in rupees before you commit.
Final verdict

Run the sample prompts above in two tools side by side. Ten minutes of testing beats a month on the wrong subscription.
