Editor’s note: This article was rewritten in October 2026. An earlier version described the Pixel 8a as a new launch. It was announced in May 2024.

Google announced the Pixel 8a in May 2024, with sales starting on 14 May at $499 for the 128GB model. It brought the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 chip and most of its AI photo tools to a cheaper phone, and it came with Google’s seven-year update promise.

Key specs at launch

  • Chip: Google Tensor G3 with Titan M2 security chip
  • Display: 6.1-inch OLED, 1080 × 2400, 120Hz, up to 2,000 nits peak (HDR)
  • Battery: 4,492mAh, 18W wired and Qi wireless charging
  • Price at launch: $499 (128GB), $559 (256GB)
  • Updates: seven years of OS, security and Feature Drop updates

The AI features, in plain words

Because it uses the same Tensor G3 chip as the Pixel 8, the 8a runs Google’s on-device photo tools. Magic Editor lets you move or remove objects in a photo, Best Take swaps in faces from a burst of group shots so everyone’s eyes are open, and Audio Magic Eraser reduces background noise in videos. Real Tone tunes the camera to render different skin tones accurately.

Should you still buy one?

The strongest argument for the Pixel 8a today is its update window: seven years from launch means support runs to around 2031, longer than most mid-range phones bought new. The main weak point is slow 18W wired charging. Buy it only at a clear discount to newer Pixel A-series models, and check the remaining update period before you do.
