READING GUIDE

Make AI useful, one task at a time.

A reading path from AI terminology to a small, reviewable workflow.

Start with a task you understand. This guide connects our explainers, glossary and tool profiles so you can move from a broad interest in AI to a practical first experiment.

Define the result before choosing the tool

Write a short brief that names the output, the information you will provide and the checks the result must pass. A useful first task might be a summary of your own notes or a draft based on a source you already know. Keep the task small enough that you can judge its accuracy without relying on another model to tell you whether it is correct. Our article on AI beyond the chatbox explains why the finished result matters more than the number of steps in a demonstration.

Learn the terms that affect your experiment

An AI agent, a context window and inference describe different parts of a system. You do not need to memorize every term before you start. Look up a term when it changes a decision: what information a tool can use, what it can do with that information, and where its permissions end. Keep the glossary open while reading provider documentation, and separate a feature description from evidence that it works well for your task.

Compare the same task across tools

Use the directory to find a relevant tool, then read its profile and official documentation. Compare like with like: the same brief, source material and expected output. Record the corrections you make as well as the time spent generating. A tool that produces a convincing first answer may still require more review than another tool that makes its limitations easier to see.

Keep a small record of what worked

Save your brief, the final edited result and a short note on what needed correction. Repeat the experiment with another ordinary example before treating it as a dependable workflow. If you publish the result, verify quotations, sources and claims yourself. The goal is a process you can explain and repeat, with a clear point where you make the final decision.
